Gilchrist Connell named a 5-Star Employer of Choice for the fifth consecutive year

September 2024

Gilchrist Connell, a leading Australian insurance sector law firm, has been announced as a 2024 5-Star Employer of Choice by Australasian Lawyer, for the fifth consecutive year.

Describing talent attraction and retention as the single biggest focus for the Australian legal sector, Australasian Lawyer observes that “performance-leading workplaces supporting the advancement of their employees, are at the forefront of the industry and on the leading edge of attracting and retaining talent”.

Firms listed in this year’s 5-Star Employers of Choice report demonstrate excellence across all aspects of employee experience. This recognition reflects Gilchrist Connell’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a high-performance culture, while fostering an inclusive and supportive working environment.

“Our firm has gone through a period of immense growth, which has seen our firm transform not only in its size but has required rapid scaling across all areas of our business. While we continue to grow, what hasn’t changed is our commitment to providing a positive working environment and offering targeted benefits that are meaningful and impactful for our people”, Managing Principal, Richard Wood, commented.

“We’re heartened that this commitment has been reaffirmed - by both our people and by Australasian Lawyer – over so many years”, he added.

To be named as one Australia’s best law firms to work for, Gilchrist Connell needed to satisfy a team of independent researchers across several criteria, including employee engagement score, remuneration, training and professional development, career progression, diversity and inclusion, access to technology and resources, communication, leadership, work-life balance, health and wellbeing, reward and recognition, and recruitment.

Gilchrist Connell’s Chief People Officer, Belinda Cohen, says the firm is committed to providing a positive culture and developing its people.

“In searching for talent, cultural fit is a critical priority, followed by relevant experience and skills. We also take a long-range view and consider a candidate’s professional and career goals in both the immediate and longer term”, Belinda said.

This ranking follows Gilchrist Connell’s recent announcement that it was named an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency and its re-certification as a Family Friendly Workplace (a joint initiative of Parents at Work and UNICEF Australia), which benchmarks the firm’s policies, practices and promotion frameworks against six core areas (flexible work, parental leave, family care, family wellbeing, leadership culture and measurement).
