Gilchrist Connell announces two principal promotions in latest round

May 2022

Leading Australian insurance sector firm, Gilchrist Connell, today announced the promotion of two Sydney-based principals, effective 1 July 2022.

The firm is pleased to welcome and congratulate Helen Tieu and Malcolm Wood on their promotion to Gilchrist Connell’s partnership. Since joining, both have demonstrated a strong commitment to outstanding client service, upholding the firm’s values of unity, quality, trust, respect, enjoyment and freshness. We warmly congratulate:

  • Helen Tieu: Since Helen started in our Insurance practice in 2020, she has advised insurers on coverage and liability issues arising from directors and officers’ liability, financial institutions, and professional indemnity claims. Helen regularly acts as defence counsel for insureds within Australia and overseas. She was recognised in the 2023 edition of The Best Lawyers in Australia for her work in Insurance Law and was a finalist in the Special Counsel of the Year category at the 2021 Women in Law Awards.
  • Malcolm Wood: Since Malcolm joined in 2017, he has run a successful hybrid practice across litigation and corporate transactional matters. In his litigated practice, Malcolm acts for a wide range of professionals, directors and officers, financial institutions and internationally based primary and excess layer insurers. He has a wealth of experience in litigating non-claims disputes and provides insurers and corporations with regulatory advice. In his Corporate practice, Malcolm advises, negotiates and drafts transaction documents in respect of sales, private mergers and acquisitions, capital raises, share buy-backs, foreign investment review board regulation, and construction law matters.

“Helen and Malcolm are much respected by both their clients and colleagues and we are delighted to welcome them to our partnership. The firm continues to go from strength to strength, particularly in the Sydney market, and Helen and Malcolm have been an important part of that,” said Managing Principal Richard Wood.

Gilchrist Connell has more than 120 expert lawyers and other legal staff nation-wide in our Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane offices.
